Pōhutukawa Update, Term 4, Week 6

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend, and with Show Day now behind us it means we are well past the halfway mark of the term, and find ourselves with less than 4 school weeks left in the year! You will have received your tamariki's end-of-year school report, and we hope you have had the opportunity to sit down and read through this together with them. As you will know, the General Comment from their homegroup teacher is written directly to your child and is a summation of the highlights and the successes of their year with us. It's also a wonderful opportunity to read and reflect on 2024 as well as look ahead to next year, be they staying in Pōhutukawa or moving on, and start to think about and discuss together some goals and aspirations they may have for 2025.

With all of that being said, it's very important to note that we are not yet at the end of the year and our message to the students continues to be that we have a lot of fantastic things to look forward to yet! You can read about them below, as well as some other important information. Thank you for your continued support, and good luck to all of our athletes competing at the Canterbury Athletics on Wednesday. Nau mai te wero, bring on the challenge!

Transition Visits

As busy as it is at the end of the year, we are also preparing our students for next year with 'Transition Visits'. Next week we will be giving the 2025 Year 6's a chance to be with our incoming 2025 Year 5's as a cohort and have a Learning Through Play session together. As well as this, our outgoing Year 6's will be spending 2 mornings in the Kauri team to learn about their programme and will spend a morning with next year's Year 8 students. These visits are a valuable chance for the tamariki to reconnect with some of their friends, and ask some questions they may have about 2025. We encourage you to talk with your tamariki about these visits and start the conversations about 2025 if you feel they're ready. Any momentum we can build now to set everyone up for a successful start to next year is gold. Mā tātou katoa te waka e hoe, we are all rowing the waka together.

Navigating the Journey

Our Navigating the Journey programme continues to roll along, we are into Growing and Changing - Te tipu me te huri o te tangata now, and our key concepts are again attached. Thanks as always for your continued support in continuing the discussions we have at school at home, too.

Cycle Safe Programme (Year 6 only)
During weeks 8 and 9 (December 2 - 10) our Year 6 students will be involved in the Cycle Safe Programme provided by the Christchurch City Council. Cycle Safe is a cycle skills education programme for schools. Students learn the benefits of cycling and how to ride with confidence and be road-wise. All Year 6 students will participate in this course and the instructors cater to all cycling abilities. Your child should have brought home a permission slip for you to sign and return to school.

Next week we will be sending some more information home about which days your child will be participating.

You can find out more information about the programme here https://ccc.govt.nz/transport/getting-around/getting-to-school/resources-for-schools/cyclesafe/ If you have any questions about the programme, please get in touch with your homegroup teacher.

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 4, Week 4

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

Another whirlwind couple of weeks has flown by, with lots of things happening in the team to keep everyone busy! A hearty congratulations to all of the 41 students who competed at the Zone Athletics on Monday. It was a fantastic day out, and there were some terrific results! Keep an eye on the newsletter next week for the rundown. Tau ke, awesome work! Back at kura, we have a large focus this term on the Health area of the New Zealand Curriculum, which started this week with a visit from Helly and the famous giraffe Harold. Please read on for a summary of what the tamariki learned about in these lessons, a couple of other highlights of the past two weeks, and a look ahead to what else is to come as we head into the second half of Term 4.

Life Education

You have probably noticed the Life Education trailer parked in the car park over the past couple of weeks.  Life Education Trust is a charity that educates and empowers children to make healthy choices so they can live full and healthy lives.

The tamariki enjoyed 2 sessions with Helly and Harold and focused on 2 key concepts relevant to their age and stage. The first lesson’s key question was:  How do we know how others are feeling? The key concepts discussed were:

- Conflict Resolution- Friendships- Decision Making- Emotional Safety- Peer Pressure- Peer Pressure- Feelings and Emotions- Emotional Changes and Grow

Our second lesson focused on the key question: What is peer pressure and how can we deal with it?  Peer pressure has both physical and emotional effects. Students explored what those are, related them to different real-life situations, and formulated strategies to deal with them.

The lessons provided valuable learning about these topics for the tamariki. Thank you for continuing these discussions at home, too.

Navigating the Journey

Continuing with our focus on health and wellbeing this term, we will be participating in the Navigating the Journey programme over the next 3 weeks. The Navigating the journey Te takahi i te ara resources use the metaphor of navigation to describe a person’s lifetime journey of  physical, social, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of hauora (wellbeing).

Navigating the Journey is a comprehensive age-appropriate programme about relationships and sexuality developed by Family planning for delivery in primary and secondary schools. This programme is aligned with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines for relationship education and sexuality education. This programme is also aligned with the health and physical education learning area of The New Zealand Curriculum.

The key concepts that will be covered for 2024 can be found on Hero. If you wish to find out more detail about any specific lessons please get in touch with your home group teacher.

William Stedman

We had the honour of hosting NZ Paralympic Athlete #208 William Stedman at kura today. William joined us to speak with the tamariki about his experiences at the recent Paris Olympics and about what it took to get there. The students were captivated by William's journey as a para-athlete. We got to hold his medal (surprisingly heavy!) and he then joined us for a game of Crossover. An awesome visit.

William has Cerebral Palsy, and  was the youngest member of the Para athletics team to compete at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games at only 16 years of age. He has always loved sport and clearly remembers watching the London 2012 Paralympics. This is where his dream started. William was so inspired by watching the Paralympics he decided he was going to become a Para athlete.

William is the embodiment of our kete value 'We Love Challenge'. It was exciting and  inspiring for the tamariki to get to meet a real-life Olympian.

String Ensemble

Yesterday we were treated to some fantastic music from the string ensemble as they performed for us at school. It was heartwarming to see the pride that the tamariki showed in performing for their peers and for us all to have a chance to hear the fruits of their labour from the past year of music lessons. Also amazing to see so many whānau there supporting, and also taking part as learners themselves. He taonga te ako, the treasure is learning. Ka rawe, awesome job!

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 4, Week 8

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

As this is the last team newsletter of the year, we'd like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you, nga mihi nui, for your tautoko, support throughout 2024. Mā tātou kātoa te waka e hoe, we all row the waka together. We've all really enjoyed the year, and as always it's such a pleasure seeing our students develop self-awareness as learners, and grow in confidence, independence and maturity. We wish our Year 6 students all the best as they head into their intermediate years, and we are looking forward to seeing our Year 5 cohort flourishing in their role as tuakana in Pōhutukawa next year. Although we're not quite there yet, we wish you all a wonderful summer break. The final school newsletter for the year will be sent out next week with information regarding the final few days of school. Please do read on for some updates from the team, and information about an upcoming celebration next Friday here at kura for the Pōhutukawa students.

Navigating the Journey

This week we concluded our Navigating the Journey lessons. We concluded with our last theme of Staying Safe. Students learned about and discussed factors that influence personal safety online, and we identified together skills to ensure safe online use and strategies, and how to respond positively to challenging situations. The Navigating the journey Te takahi i te ara resources use the metaphor of navigation to describe a person’s lifetime journey of  physical, social, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of hauora (wellbeing). Thank you for your support with this by discussing this with your tamariki at home.

Cycle Safe

It has been great to have such miharo, awesome weather over the past week for our Year 6 tamariki to get out there on their bikes and embrace the challenge with the Cycle Safe team from the CCC. It's always such a beneficial programme for our Year 6's to do to learn the benefits of cycling and how to ride with confidence and be road-wise. the programme will continue next week and conclude on Tuesday.

End-of-Year Celebration Picnic

The students have been planning in groups of 2, 3 or 4 what they would like to bring to our picnic next Friday. We have asked them to ensure the people in their group agree on what to bring, and thank you for double-checking at home, too. Even though there have been ambitious plans of fruit platters, and cheeseboards, simple is best, so thanks for your support in ensuring that students bring something small to share with their "picnic group", or enjoy themselves.

It is a normal school day, and we have our Final Celebration Assembly in the morning, so please ensure that your child is wearing their school uniform as normal. Thank you checking that tamariki are not bringing lollies, chocolates, or any drinks except water. We will be supplying them with an ice-block as a thirst quencher.

Finally, our picnic time will be from 10:50 am until 12:40 pm, and we will have a normal lunchtime break in the afternoon. If you think your child will need some extra food, please send them with a lunchbox as normal.

Library Books and Sports Uniforms

As we head towards the end of the year on December 17th, it's a good time to remind your tamariki to return any library books they still have issued, or sports uniforms that are sitting at home and need to be returned. The Lost Property on the library deck is where unnamed property ends up, and this is also a place to check as it will be taken to ther Salvation Army at the end of the year

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 4, Week 2

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all, what a busy start to Term 4 we've had! It’s been great to make the most of this warm spell of weather to be able to be outside on the Park these past 2 weeks preparing for our school Athletics Day yesterday. We also had a lot of keen students competing at the Huxster MTB relay on Wednesday, and the Choir has been preparing for their big night tonight at the Christchurch Music festival. Special shout out to Megan for supporting them at dress rehearsal today and at their performance at the Christchurch Town Hall tonight. Have fun and sing your hearts out!

Athletics Day

The tamariki embraced the challenges and ran, jumped, threw, and supported each other through a very successful day. It all of our students itwas not only a great way to show out kete value 'We Love Challenge', but also a chance for our students to connect and show support to our junior school... and of course for some it was a much anticipated chance to showcase their amazing athletic abilities! Well done to all students for making these really successful day, and congratulations to those who have qualified for the Zones.

The South Zone Athletics day will be held at Hansen Park on Tuesday November 4th. As students can only compete in 3 events, we will help those who have qualified for more than 3 events, to make the decision about which events to compete in. This sometimes opens up other spots for more students to compete. Thank you for your patience as we work through this decision making process with the budding athletes. We will be sending out more information about the South Zone Athletics Competition next week after these conversations.

Long Jump Next Tuesday - Parent Help Required

On Tuesday afternoon we will be walking to Hillview Christian School with the Pōhutukawa students who have opted to do competitive long jump. We have 40 students, and require some parent help to ensure a successful trip. We aim to leave school just after 1:20 pm, walk to Hillview Christian School, do the long jump, and return by 3 pm. If you can assist, please email your child's Homegroup teacher. We thank you in advance for your support.

Huxster MTB Relay

Hearty congratulations to the amazing contingent of Year 5-6 students who competed at the Huxster Mountain Bike Relay on Wednesday.

The Huxster Mountain Bike event is a time trial through various tracks at McLeans Island. The objective is to complete as many laps in a given time around a circuit. Our students competed in pairs

Well done to all the competitors for taking on the wero, challenge and giving it their all. Huge congratulations go out to Zach G and Ben S for finishing in 1st place, and Izzy C and Laura S for placing 2nd in their categories. Amazing!

Thank you to Melissa Hurst for the photo of the kids in front of our flash new gazebo!

CCC and Life Education Visit

Our CCC classes are continuing and this term we are covering digital technology (coding), learning languages (NZSL), biology (human anatomy), and physical education (Ki o Rahi). Lots of great learning to be had, as well as plenty of learning conversations to be had at home.  Life Education Trust is a charity that educates and empowers children to make healthy choices so they can live full and healthy lives. The key questions we will be covering with them and the students are How do we know how others are feeling? and What is peer pressure and how can we deal with it? Lots of great learning to be had, as well as plenty of learning conversations to be had at home, too.

AVAILLL

This term we are running the AVAILLL literacy programme, which entails students "reading" selected films with the subtitle feature turned on. While the students read/watch the films they engage in activities to develop vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and spelling. The emphasis is on understanding how words are constructed and the activities reflect this. The aim of the programme is to develop vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and spelling.

Have a great weekend, everybody. Kia pai ngā rā whakatā

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 3, Week 10

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

We have finished the term with a lot of fun today at the Beckenham's Got Talent show. We were treated to music, comedy, dance, and even an improvised routine while the judges deliberated. A very fun finish to a busy term. We hope you all take the chance for some extra family time over the next 2 weeks, and that the tamariki can have some well-earned downtime. See you all again for Term 4! Please read on for some of the latest happenings from the team, and some information about a touch rugby competition below. Kia pai ngā rā whakatā, enjoy the break, everyone,

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby season at Centennial Park/Pioneer starts on Thursday 17th Oct, runs for 8 weeks, with no game on Thursday Nov 14th (Anniversary Weekend). Teams can be mixed. There are 6 players on the field and ideally 1-2 subs. We currently have two full times and a mixed team in need of more players. Additional teams can be made if there are enough players and parents to help manage. Games for this grade are usually at ~ 4.30/5 p.m. or later on Thursdays for 25 minutes. Cost per player is usually ~ $15-20 for the whole term of play. Please complete this form to register your child’s interest: https://forms.gle/kKQHZZbuvSzB7kWz8 by October 6

Planting at Our Ponds

It was rawe, great to continue working alongside the Christchurch City Council again this year to continue the Pōhutukawa tradition of kaitiakitanga/ guardianship of our pūroto, ponds. Planting and tending to native plants such as kahikatea, koromiko, kōwhai, harakeke, ti kouka and more has become a tradition for the Pōhutukawa team and it was so good to see students again embrace their mahi, work, and plant over 100 plants along the pond's eastern edge.

Speech Finals

The Pōhutukawa Speech Finals were held in Mapuna,  the Hall on Wednesday. 8 students were chosen to represent their home group in the finals, and it was a fantastic effort by all! The Finals were adjudicated by 3 astute, discerning, and impartial judges, which meant the home group teachers could enjoy being part of the audience with the other students. The audience conducted themselves in a fantastic manner, showing appreciation and respect to all of our finalists. We were treated to persuasive speeches on many topics. Congratulations to all of our finalists, special mention to our runners-up Art and Macie, and well done to Jensen for winning the competition with his speech on the importance of protecting our native birds. Congratulations goes out to all of our students who stepped up and presented their speech to a group. Tino pai rawa atu tō mahi, awesome work!

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 3, Week 8

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

Hard to believe it's 2 weeks to go until the end of Term 3! We've been enjoying some warm, sunny afternoons and it's great to see some students starting to bring sunhats to school. Sunhats become a compulsory uniform item next term, and it's definitely a good idea for them to be worn now, as well. Children can choose either plain red or plain black wide-brimmed or bucket hats – these can be purchased from Mainland Uniforms. Thank you for taking the time to read on for some updates on our last 2 weeks, and some other important information. Thanks as always for your continued support.

Margaret Mahy Playground Trip

The weather was kind to us last Wednesday as we filled three buses and visited Margaret Mahy Playground for the afternoon. The students were super excited to be going to the playground, and some couldn't quite believe we were going "just to play!?" It was a joy to see the students showing our Kete values out in the community and the trip went really smoothly. We Care, We Get There Together, We Make a Difference, We Love Learning, and We Love Challenge were all on display as the students played together, interacted with their environment, gave their social, physical and cognitive skills a workout, and, well, just had fun! It affirmed that so much learning can happen outside of the classroom. We'd like to extend our gratitude to the big squad of 20 parent helpers for  their tautoko, support in making the trip a success. We hope you enjoy this movie of the trip that we showed at Celebration Assembly today.

Paralympic Rotations

Hopefully you have been hearing all about our Paralympic Sport Rotations in the afternoons. This is the last part of our term-long inquiry into the Olympics and Paralympics. We have been using our 2024 concept of Identity to learn about accessible sports, which encourage people to be independent, rely on themselves and acknowledge what everyone can bring to the table. Students have been learning about goal ball, boccia, sitting volleyball, and frisbee golf, all sports that support unity and inclusivity for all members of our team. They challenge the students to improve both physically and mentally to persevere and overcome challenges, nau mai te wero! We hope you enjoy the photos of our rotations.

Choir

On Wednesdays, the Y 5-8 Choir has been rehearsing a range of pieces that we will be performing at the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival in November. This Wednesday they had the pleasure of attending an Area Rehearsal at Haeata Community Campus. This rehearsal was led by the Musical Directors of the festival and was attended by a range of schools that will be taking part in the performances. Our choir's hard work shone through at this rehearsal, the level of focus and attention that the students showed was amazing. They should be very proud of the work they have put in! They are looking forward to getting stuck back into our rehearsals and getting ready for the big November performance. Tino pai tamariki mā!

Pōhutukawa's Got Talent!

We laughed, we cheered, and we were left amazed at the talent of the performers this afternoon at our 'Pōhutukawa's Got Talent' auditions. A HUGE shout out to everybody who summoned up the courage to stand in front of their peers, as well as teachers and whānau to play music, sing, dance, tell jokes, and fully entertain! We will be letting the 3 acts who will represent us at the whole school 'Beckenham's Got Talent' show

Speeches

We have been working very hard on our persuasive speeches in Writing over the past few weeks. It's been wonderful to see the students diligently planning and crafting their speeches,  with many also putting in some extra mahi, work at home too.
Next week they will be presenting their speeches, and we will conduct a Speech Final to award the Megan McLachlan Year 5 - 6 Speech Cup. Nau mai te wero, embrace the challenge!

Duathlon

Last Monday saw 33 of our students take up the wero, the challenge of the School Duathlon, and test their endurance over a course that saw them run, then bike, then run again! It was wonderful to have their fellow students outside cheering them on and to see so many family members here at kura to tautoko, support the tamariki. You could see the lift that it gave them when they heard the cheers. Congratulations to all of the competitors, and special mention to our Year 5 Champions Haydn and Jayme, and our Year 6 Champions Laura and Zach. Look out for a movie from the Kauri Media team of the event coming soon

Beckenham then achieved a couple of stunning results at the Canterbury Duathlon this week at Ruapuna. We had 13 competitors who represented our kura. A huge effort from these students to back the school race up just a week later! Congratulations to these athletes for giving it heaps and Haydn winning the Year 5 Boys event, and Laura coming third in her Year 6 Girls' race. Ka mau te wehi, kōrua, awesome achievement you two!

Rae Returning

Next week we will be welcoming Rae Marsh back from medical leave. We have had a couple of visits from Rae this week, and the students were very excited to see her back! We'd like to thank Mikyla, who has done a stellar job, and has made amazing connections with the tamariki in Rae's stead. We are excited that Mikyla will be staying on with the team for the rest of the year, working 3 days a week to cover classroom release time.

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 3, Week 6

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

Thank you for reading the important information below regarding our trip to Margaret Mahy Playground on Wednesday.

We hope you have been enjoying the wonderful, warm weather and lighter, brighter mornings. It's always nice to see some early signs of spring! Almost on cue, we had our last week of Winter Sports last week. A HUGE thank you to all of the parents who supported the kids with their Winter Sports. We had more than 70 students participating in the South Zone competition this year, and we simply could not have had that many kids playing without the support of parents. The non-competitive sport participants have also learned and enjoyed badminton, table tennis, chess, and Theatre Sports.  Ngā mihi e te whānau mo ō tautoko nui, we thank you for your huge support. We hope you all enjoy the photos of the sports, and a sneak peek into the vibrant Olympic-themed Keith Haring-inspired Calendar Art that is now on its way to the printers. Look out for order forms coming your way soon!

Margaret Mahy Trip Wednesday, September 4, 11:00 - 2:30 pm

The weather for our trip to Margaret Mahy Playground on Wednesday looks a little cooler than it has been, and changeable so it will be important for the children to be prepared for that by bringing a waterproof jacket with them. Thank you for your support in prepping the tamariki for a successful trip by talking about its purpose, and expectations. We have attached a Social Story to this post so you can talk through this at home.

Wednesday morning is a normal morning at school, then at 11:00 am we will be on the bus to Margaret Mahy Playground. The bus ride takes about 20  minutes.  We are primarily going to have fun! We'll enjoy being in the community together and representing our kura. As a bonus, we'll be using this trip to inform our next writing topic: writing a recount.

Everyone will need to wear their school uniform (no house tops please) and suitable shoes for playing. They will need a BIG lunch and a full drink bottle. We will be ordering some pizza to enjoy while we are there, but it probably won't be enough to sustain them. The students have filled in a form indicating their preferences. If you would prefer your child not to have pizza, please let your home group teacher know.

We will be back on the bus at 2:00 pm and students will be released from school at 3:00 pm as usual.

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the trip.

Ngā mihi mahana,

The Pōhutukawa Team

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 3, Week 4

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

How rawe, awesome, to see our Pōhutukawa Kapa Haka rōpu giving it heaps today at our Celebration Assembly. We were also treated to a rockin' performance from the Groovy Gooses band featuring our very own Art as their lead singer. All the best for your contest  in a couple of weeks! We hope you enjoy the photos of today's performances and a couple of short movies of the kapa haka performing the waiata Toia Mai and E Minaka Ana. Please read on for news and information about some exciting upcoming events. 2 more weeks of Winter Sports! Have a great weekend everyone, kia pai ngā rā whakata.

Spring is in the Air

It's starting to feel more and more like spring, and as is always the case at this time of the year we have had a fair bit of sickness throughout the team. Thank you for your vigilance around keeping children at home if they are unwell. Also, with the variable weather at this time of the year, it's a good time to remind everyone about the importance of noticing when it gets warm that we need to look after ourselves by drinking lots of water, and taking a layer off...(and then looking after polar fleeces!), particularly in the afternoons. As always, there are many learning opportunities about managing ourselves and looking after ourselves. Thank you for your support around this, mā tātou kātoa te waka e hoe, we're all in the waka together.

Calendar Art

The tamariki have been busy producing their Olympics-themed Calendar Art for the PTA fundraiser this year. The art is inspired by American street artist Keith Haring, who was himself inspired by artists like Walt Disney and Dr. Seuss. Keep an eye out for order forms coming your way soon.

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 3 Week 2

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

How lovely to see the sun this afternoon! We seem to have raced through the first 2 weeks of Term 3, and it has been great to see tamariki back at school in a positive mood, after a well-deserved break. While we have had to deal with some grotty weather after returning to school, the students have managed really well and settled into the new term nicely. Please read on for some team news, updates, and some upcoming events to put on your calendar.

Olympic Games

This term we are studying Social Sciences by learning about the Olympics and Paralympics, and more specifically the Evolution of the Olympic Movement. It has been great to launch our Paris 2024 Olympic learning site (which you can access via your tamariki's school account) on which the students can access a plethora of information and learning activities. This week we have looked briefly at the events, the countries, the mascot, and the history of the Games. We’re looking forward to learning a lot more over the next few weeks, following the progress of our athletes, and celebrating their resilience and perseverance! We love challenge, nau mai te wero.

Road Patrollers

For our Year 6's, being a member of the Road Patrol is one of the key ways they can show leadership in our senior school. It is also a wonderful way to hone time-management skills, and perform a valuable service for both our kura and the community; rain, hail or shine! It was great to have our Year 5 patrollers out completing their training with Constable Meg last week, and they are now on patrol before and after school until the end of the year. Thank you for your support in ensuring they are aware of their days on patrol.

Update on Rae, and welcome to Mikyla

As you may know, Rae Marsh is away on medical leave. After receiving a hip replacement last week, Rae is very happy to be home now and is working hard to be independent and walking again! While Rae rehabilitates, we welcome Mikyla Campbell to the teaching team. Mikyla has slotted seamlessly into our Pōhutukawa whānau and she has made some fantastic connections with the tamariki already. Please feel free to contact Mikyla at any time should you need to. She is looking forward to getting to know the tamariki and their whānau more over the coming weeks.

South Zone Basketball Tournament

Last Thursday some of our keen basketball players competed in the South Zone Basketball tournament held at Hillview Christian School. While the results didn’t go our way, it was an excellent opportunity to pit our skills against some of the best Year 5-6 basketball players in the area. The team represented our kura, school with pride and embodied our school values of We Love Challenge and We Get There Together wonderfully. Well done, team!

'Cool' Curriculum Classes

CCC classes continue with some changes for Term 3. Gayle is continuing to teach Visual Arts this term with some exciting Olympic-themed Calendar Art to look forward to - watch this space! Mikyla is covering Digital Technology and continuing with Coding. Steve is teaching Health with a look at our Wellbeing/Hauora and Social and Emotional coaching, and Megan is teaching the students financial literacy through the Banqer programme. There is always a lot of learning over the term in CCC, so we encourage you to keep chatting at home about what we cover in these courses. He taonga te ako, the treasure is learning.

Maths Family Whānau Evening

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 2, Week 10

Ngā mihi e te whānau, warm greetings to you all,

What a wonderful sunny finish to the term today - made extra bright by the rainbow colours worn in support of diversity and money raised for Youthline. A wonderful way to show 'We Care' - arohaina te tangata. We hope you all enjoy some quality family time over the next 2 weeks, and that the students can take the chance to replenish with a well-earned rest after a busy and productive term. Please read on for some important updates, and we wish you a safe and relaxing term break.

Mānawatia a Matariki

It was rawe, awesome, to see so many whānau at our Matariki celebration last week, and to see the kapa haka rōpu up on stage doing their thing. Matariki is an opportunity to reflect on the past 4 seasons, celebrate the present with whanau, and look forward to what is to come as the days get longer... if not warmer quite yet! We have been learning all about Matariki over the past few weeks. Of the 9 stars we acknowledge, 2 are associated with the natural elements of wind and rain. We certainly had those elements in play over the last week or so, and a lot of learning also came with them. It would be wonderful to reflect on this learning with your tamariki over the holidays. He taonga te ako, the treasure is learning.

Stationery

As we are at the halfway point in the year, we'd really appreciate it if you could check with your tamariki about their stationery and what they need. Essential and consumable items that all students require are: HB pencils, an eraser, glue sticks, a highlighter, and a blue pen. We have gone through the students' remaining stationery , and they will be able to tell you what they need. Thanks for your support with this, mā tātou kātoa te waka e hoe.

Canterbury Cross Country

A massive congratulations to Laura, Jayme, Max, Lily and Haydn who represented both themselves and our kura so admirably at the Canterbury Cross Country last Wednesday. The conditions added and extra layer of challenge, with the runners having to battle some rainy, windy, muddy conditions. Fantastic to see so many runners from Beckenham competing, and special congratulations to Laura who finished overall in the 2nd Year 6 Girls' race, and Max who finished 6th in the Year 5 Boys' race. A stellar achievement!

Winter Sport

Thank you to the parents who offered their time to support the teams. We still have 6 more weeks of Winter Sport next term, and let's hope for some sunny weather so more sports can go ahead! Keep an eye on Hero for any cancellations, and we'll look forward to seeing many of you on the sidelines next term.

Head Lice

We are starting to see a few cases of head lice at school. We have linked some helpful information about head lice -here - please read this if you are unsure of how to detect and treat headlice.

Pōhutukawa Update, Term 2 Week 8

Ngā mihi e te whānau,

It was fantastic to see so many of you at our Learning Conferences last week, we really appreciate the whanaungatanga that comes as a result of these conversations. Mā tātou te katoa te waka e hoe, we are all rowing the waka together.

A huge mihi/ thank you to those parents who supported our Food for Thought visit to New World on Wednesday, and St Martins New World for hosting us in-store. We certainly ran the gauntlet with the weather in the afternoon, and all the home groups were able to enjoy a practical lesson outside of school to consolidate what they learned during the in-class sessions. We hope you enjoy the photos, and the pānui/information about the programme below.

All the best to those tamariki who are entering the 40 Hour Challenge this weekend. Nau mai te wero - bring on the challenge! As we wind up the term, we have a few housekeeping items for you to be aware of, so thank you for reading on.

Empowering Healthier Futures Through "Food for Thought

This week we had Karli from Food for Thought visit the school to deliver three nutrition sessions to the students. Our schoolwide concept for 2024 is Identity, and we have chosen to look at this concept through the lens of Health this term.

The first two sessions saw students learn about how foods and nutrients support active and growing bodies. We also learned how to read the nutritional information on packaged foods and explored the sugar content in different drinks. We discovered that a 600ml bottle of Coca-Cola contains a staggering 16 teaspoons of sugar!

In the third session, students were given the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge in a real-world setting. We visited St Martins New World where students analysed nutrition labels on various packaged foods to learn more about what is in our foods. Pōhutukawa are now expert food detectives! Don't hesitate to ask them to showcase their new skills to you.

At the end of the programme, each class received a $60 New World gift card to share some healthy kai. Watch this space!

It was great to have the Food for Thought team with us to give our students important lessons they can carry with them through life. If you are interested in learning more about Food for Thought, visit their website here: www.foodforthought.co.nz

Toys and Precious Items

We have noticed an increase in students bringing toys and precious items to school e.g. Rubik's Cubes. Unfortunately, due to the tendency of these things to get broken or go missing, we ask that all students not bring these to school. Thank you for your support with this.

Matariki Evening and Kapa Haka Performance

Matariki is the start of the Māori new year and a time of reflection, connection and planning for the year ahead. We would like to celebrate with you and your whānau on the 25th of June from 5pm - 7pm.  As part of the evening Whaea Cath Milio is preparing our kapa haka rōpu for a short performance on the night. The performance will be at approximately 6:40pm in Māpuna, our school hall, and will be after our Matariki activities in the Hub. It's a wonderful opportunity for our kapa haka rōpu to perform. Your child/children will need to meet in Pūkaki (opposite the Pōhutukawa Hub) at 6:15pm in order to get ready. We look forward to seeing you there!

Shoes
It has been really great to see the students 'stepping up' to show We Care for our school environment by removing their shoes during this wet and muddy season.  We are lucky to have wonderful underfloor heating in the classrooms, so feet stay nice and warm, and as an added benefit our carpet stays mud-free! In addition to this, we suggest that if your child is coming home with very muddy clothes, please consider supplying them with a spare pair of school shorts and a spare school top for them to change into once they finish their games.
